Corporal Sydney Jewell, 4th Battalion, July/August 1916

The Henty Observer
and Culcairn Shire Register (NSW)
12 August 1916

In a letter Mr Stibbard received from Private Syd. Jewell, he says:

I am at present with Ernie Fugger who was reported wounded last week in his company and platoon. It seems like home to be with someone from your own town, and Ernie and I have been talking Henty ever since my arrival.

The sinking of the boat Kitchener was on came as a great shock to the whole of the army, and our one hope is that there is a good man to take his place, which can not be vacant for long.

By jove, you can see here that they have rallied round the colors at Home, and they may have the luck to see some of the actual going on if things go on as at present. Sorry to say I only received one batch of papers, and that was in Egypt. I have a big batch of letters to day, and they will keep me busy.
